We kicked off October with a great time at the final Meadowlands event to be held up here in Mendocino at Camp Navarro - the end of an era but they hope to continue on the east coast.
|
|
|
|
What a blast to sit around the campfire telling stories of the old days with our dear friend Mila (aka "the Hash Queen"). The older we get, the more precious these stories become! Meadowlands for several years has been such a sweet gathering of the cannabis tribe, just before we head home to begin harvest.
|
|
|
|
Yep, it was early risings as always to cut the plants before first light, as is our tradition. The reason is that as the day progresses, the terpene aromas of the flowers off gas in the warmth of the sun so we cut them while it is still dark to contain those treasured terps.
|
|
|
|
This was an incredibly small crop for us, as we only grew our few personal plants this year, but we still treated them with gentle love all the way through.
|
|
|
|
Every day at this time of year is a new discovery as the trees change colors and the land adjusts to the new cool climate. While days may be warmish, the nights have become cold and sometimes even frosty. Zinnias and tomatoes are over for the season and the last dahlias have bloomed. Turkey and deer are everywhere, and the presence of bears is obvious by the dug- up wasp nests where they gather the honey, leaving behind huge prints from their paws that scraped it from the earth. Living with nature is constantly fascinating!

Mid-month we took a wonderful road trip north to visit friends in Nevada County. Mark Greyshock of Greenshock Farms was our first stop and what a treat to see his vast gardens full of giant buds that all smell divine!
|
|
|
|
Mark is a master farmer and breeder and we have been in love with his Tropical Sleighride varieties for many years as we've had the privilege to judge them in the Emerald Cup. Mark has placed in the Top 20 more times than we can recall!
|
|
|
|
Our next stop up in the Gold Country hills of northern California was with our beloved friends, Monica and Wade Laughter. Wade has been bravely fighting several health issues the past years but he is a tough survivor and as bright and brilliant as ever. He has helped so very many people with his CBD and cannabis medical knowledge that Wade deserves all that caring love energy right back at him. Please send some his way.

By the time we returned to our ranch in Mendocino County, the work on the land required by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife was in full swing - and extremely impressive! Much thanks go to CDFW for the generous grant which covered the costs of lots of road and lake work and more so that we could complete the environmental upgrades necessary to fulfill our Lake and Streambed Agreement. We never would have had to do that if we had not been licensed cannabis cultivators, but we are so happy it happened as it all supports our wildlife neighbors.

Finally, the rain has come at the end of the month and that means we can light the woodstove and get cozy. The land was so dry from the long hot summer, but now we can breathe easier knowing the constant threat of wildfires is mostly past. Hopefully, we'll have a wet winter to quench the thirst of the land and the lake and the creeks. While we lived for many years in the heart of The City (San Francisco), it is such a blessing to now be part of the very soul of nature every day.
