It's been a busy month, and one full of contrasts. Sizzling hot days balanced by the most rain we have ever seen here in August.
Lush plants reaching for the sky followed by gopher and deer infestations and devastation. Quiet days on the ranch and crowds of friends at The Emerald Cup. Equanimity comes to mind, as we move through life observing the yin and yang of it all.
The month began with a wonderful visit from some of the Ganjier gang - what a treat as Chef Lucas made us a delicious meal and we talked cannabis (of course) late into the night.
Even during the extreme heat, the girls in the garden were growing with gusto, along with various veggies and colorful zinnias. The hungry gophers did attack the roots of a few of plants, but with careful application of Tanglefoot, a super sticky substance spread on the lower stems, the gophers were deterred.

The first half of the month was devoted to preparing for and setting up and then enjoying the Emerald Cup 20th anniversary celebration at Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland. Our offering, besides Judging the flowers once again, was to create the AREA 101 Lounge space outside which became the premiere chill zone at the event. Classic Emerald Cup memorabilia, cozy couches and sacred altars decorated the space, along with Swami rolling joints pretty much non-stop.
On Saturday afternoon, hashishin Lena Burns brought the famous Frenchy hookah for everyone to enjoy. Sunday was awards in the beautiful main theater and Swami and I were honored to announce the best flowers for our last time - we always knew 20 years as Judges would be our limit. What an honor to especially announce the Mendo Dope clan who won not only best Personal Flowers but also Best of Show!

The weather flipped with the full moon and when we returned to the ranch it almost felt like November. Grey skies and cool temperatures were followed by some actual rain for a couple of days that had us all confused! Perhaps it also confused the deer who, for the first time in 21 years, discovered the cannabis plants in the garden and jumped the fence to nibble on them. Some serious damage was done before we realized it and considering we are only growing our few personal plants allowed, it was a big dent in the crop.
Thank you for these beautiful ladies and thank you to everyone who has offered to help us bounce back from our setback!
Luckily we have a wonderful community, and received some cannabis starts to plant which will be small but hopefully still have enough time to make some nice buds. We must always count our blessings as the lovely Pink Lion plant had been specially wrapped in netting so it survived the deer's feasting.

As the feel of fall begins to permeate the air, we are excited for the upcoming Club Swami Salon in San Francisco on September 6th.

The days are shorter and the shadows are longer and soon it will be time to fire up the woodstove. But for now, we appreciate the sunshine on our backs and the blessings from our beloved community.

Peace and love to you all, Swami & Nikki

Chris Conrad and Mikki Norris are known as the “Power Couple of Pot” for their 30 years at the forefront of the cannabis legalization movement with a series of educational materials and books. They helped bring industrial hemp back to America, were leaders in California’s Proposition 215 campaign to legalize medical marijuana and exposed the atrocities of the US drug war by telling the stories of its victims. They helped pass SB 420, the patient collective law and Chris has worked as an expert witness in many of the most important marijuana cases in California. They fought unsuccessfully to pass Prop. 19 in 2010 and their hard work culminated in the passage of Prop. 64, in 2016. There is so much more to learn and stories to hear with these two so we hope you can join us on September 25th!
